TUESDAY TRENDS: CROSS FUNCTIONAL CANNABIS ROLES

Trends come and go. Some stick, some don’t. Trends are only trending until… well… until they’re not. In which case, we then all have new trends to talk about. Trending topics are always a major point of discussion amongst us at Protis Global. We love to share articles and information about the latest and greatest and predict whether it’s here to stay or a short-lived wave.

Right now, one of the trends we haven’t been able to stop talking about is the new shift we are seeing in what roles in the cannabis industry require.

This week we’ll be talking about CROSS FUNCTIONAL CANNABIS ROLES.

A role in the cannabis industry can have the same title and job description as it would in any other industry, but because of the nature of the industry and the growing companies inside of this industry, the role will likely be very different.

Cannabis isn’t new, but legal cannabis is. This creates a post-prohibition environment that leads to change and differences that are unmatched by other industries. As we have mentioned before, the type of person that thrives in this industry is gritty and ready to roll with the punches. (link to frank’s article)

Many people are happy with the focused and often myopic function of their role. Others thrive in a “wild wild west” kind of environment. If you’re into a little bit of disorder but a ton of opportunity for correction, throw on your cowboy hat and pony out to the cannabis industry.

We spoke to Kristen Escobar, Recruitment Manager, about the difference in recruiting for cannabis versus other industry and she highlighted one role in particular that she is currently searching for the perfect candidate for.

Kristen is looking for Caliva’s new Business Systems Analyst located in San Jose, CA. She says “the unique aspect of this position lies in the synthesis of finance and IT. The person that thrives here is someone who enjoys identifying bottlenecks and problems and finding creative and sustainable solutions for the company as a whole.”

Caliva is looking for someone who, unlike in other industries, can do more than what their typical role will require. Someone with experience in, both, IT and finance isn’t particularly common but it’s exactly what Caliva needs. As a quickly growing company in an always changing industry, the person that fills this position will need to be hands on, gritty, and have the ability to pivot quickly. This person will need to be organized in order to be able to always be in a position to roll with the punches.

Problem solvers tend to do well in this industry. We stress the infancy of the industry because it is important. The workforce is pioneering and is encountering problems and barriers that haven’t yet been experienced. Solutions have to be quick, thorough, and sustainable. The leaders in this organization are essentially creating the precedent in the company and potentially the industry.

This industry has consultants. That’s not what Caliva is looking for. Caliva needs a “hit the ground running and get your hands dirty” kind of person who is ready to do more than conceptualize. Caliva wants someone in the trenches implementing initiatives and creating defined, evergreen paths.

As you can see, this could be beyond the reach of some and exciting and enticing to others. It’s not for everyone, but if you think this could be the right space for you to flourish, reach out to Kristen at [email protected]. Go ahead and shoot her your resume too while you’re at it!
