Job Duties: Searching for a hands-on Scientist to join our Strain Engineering team. This role is focused on developing strains to increase the production of fermentation-based sweet proteins. The ideal candidate will have a background in molecular biology techniques, protein biochemistry, metabolic engineering, proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, fluxomics and strong sensibilities in data and quality. This position will report to the Director of Biology. Role & Responsibilities Design, build, and test microbial strains to improve strain performance based on knowledge of protein biosynthesis, metabolic pathways, and cellular physiology Apply multi-omics metabolic engineering approaches and develop powerful novel approaches Generate new hypotheses by mining scientific literature and in-house data and models Design and execute experiments in microtiter plates and shake flasks to identify or remove barriers to improve strain performance Analyze, interpret, and report diverse data streams using data analysis tools (eg. JMP etc.) to inform and guide strain engineering Troubleshoot experimental, operational, and equipment issues and implement solutions Build in-house expertise; provide input on scientific direction and decision-making process Document and share findings through maintenance of scientific notebook, technical reports, oral presentations, and project updates Develop, maintain, and follow standard operating procedures (SOP’s) Collaborate with Fermentation, Downstream Processing, Analytical Sciences, Data Quality Analytics and Product Development teams on strain validation, fermentation optimization, process development, analytical characterization, sensory evaluation, and regulatory approval Train, mentor, and coach junior team members
Background Requirements: Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, biological sciences, (bio)chemical engineering, or a related field with relevant experience, or a Master’s degree with 5+ years of relevant industry experience Proficient in molecular biology techniques, metabolic engineering, protein biochemistry, proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics (preferred), and fluxomics (preferred) Fundamental and applied knowledge of fermentation, process development, and food systems (preferred) Strong analytical and problem solving skills; outstanding written and verbal communication Flexibility and adaptability to meet the dynamic needs of a startup environment
