R&D Food Scientist


Overview: This individual is responsible to support the organization in the area of Research & Development for new product development. The Scientist / Sr. Scientist will manage multiple projects of various degrees of difficulty, and will contribute to portions of more complex technical projects as part of a larger team. Will be responsible for planning and conducting tests, analyzing and evaluating the data, and formulating conclusions to accomplish department goals. This position will play a key role in leading product development efforts involving co-manufacturers along with managing projects at our 3rd party product development partner.

Job Duties:

• Food product development for sweet baked goods from idea/ concept stage through launch including utilizing co-manufacturers and 3rd party product developers.
• Be R&D lead on cross functional team regarding Stage Gate development project.
• Provide excellent skills in areas of formulation development, leveraging knowledge on moisture management, shelf-life, and great tasting foods.
• Work with Marketing, Quality, Regulatory, and Supply Chain on developing product ideas, concepts/ protocepts, products, and finished goods.
• Develop and design new and improved products in accordance with the company’s innovation strategy. Responsibilities include sensory and shelf life studies.
• Analyze consumer testing and sensory data to draw conclusions and communicate results.
• Develop and implement technologies and support both new product and ingredient development.
• Maintain and improve existing ingredients and products.
• Work cross functionally with experts on the team to understand product performance.
• Maintain and update ingredient nutrient trends.
• Coordinate all documentation that support final product formulation
• Generate and maintain accurate and complete records including official lab notebook and utilization of on-line specification system.
• Develop ideas, data and write invention disclosure record.
• Become subject matter experts (SMEs) on the consumers and products related to their specific project.
• Perform additional R&D duties as assigned.

Background Requirements:

• 5-10 years experience in the food industry working in R&D and/or product development.
• Products development experience in both Upstream/Front End and Product Development/ Qualification/Launch.
• Proven track record of culinary and technical innovation with food or beverage products is required.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications required.
• Excellent communication and cross-functional teamwork skills are a must.
• Able to maintain work area neat and organized.
• Strong ability to identify potential product /packaging quality opportunities.
• Good time management and multitasking skills.
• Excellent leader, communicator, and trainer.
• Ability to influence and lead people and decisions in situations absent of a direct reporting structure.
• Ability and willingness to take action.
• Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Willingness to accept 40% travel.

Related Skills:

• This position requires a MS or PhD in Science (e.g., Food Science, Chemistry, etc.) or a BS, MS in Engineering (e.g., Chemical, Biochemical, Food, etc.). PhD preferred.
