The Role

A State Sales Manager – New York is tasked with delivering the annual sales and financial plan. The State Manager effectively represents Hood River Distillers by creating and introducing company brands, programs, and strategies to key Distributor principles and targeted on and off-premise accounts. This position must communicate and organize regional chain authorizations, pricing, and programs in conjunction with the VP Sales.

Sales Management

The State Sales Manager – New York successfully plans and manages activities for multiple accounts to ensure achievement of targeted objectives. Success is measured in the following categories:

  • Sales volume, revenue, and margin
  • Building, developing, and maintaining relationships with key accounts
  • Points of distribution
  • Achieving key performance indicators with targeted account lists
  • Distributor communication and execution
  • Merchandising
  • Time management
  • Market intelligence, competitive presence, market conditions
  • Profitably managing portfolio sales and promotion efforts
  • Communication of HRD standards and direction

Selling Responsibilities

A State Sales Manager – New York assists business partners’ efforts delivering effective sales presentations and programs as required that support achievements of HRD sales objectives in targeted accounts. Success is measured in the following categories:

  • Knowing in depth the features and benefits of HRD products and programs, persuasively making comparisons to competition and the market environment as needed
  • Obtaining appropriate distribution and share of business within all on and off premise key accounts
  • Developing positive customer relationships in the process of visiting targeted accounts
  • Presenting the entire portfolio and current programs to generate maximum dollar and case sales volume
  • Maintain active involvement in local trade events
  • Adhering to all federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing the sale of alcoholic beverage products in accounts

Distributor Management

A State Sales Manager – New York is expected to assist the VP Sales achieve the maximum efforts and results of HRD brands by our business partners and managing influential relationships at execution levels within distributor structures. Success can be measured in the following categories:

  • Pricing
    • Consumer competitive pricing
    • Structured to provide targeted margin to HRD
  • Distributor Knowledge
    • Educating business partners on HRD history, product quality, programs, standards, and market objectives
  • Programs
    • Developed to influence the consumer at the point of purchase to maximize the potential for impulse sales and brand loyalty
  • Distributor Share of Mind
    • Maximizing efforts of all staff
    • Leveraging all support to exceed expectations
    • Time in the field working with distributor sales personnel
    • Conduct planning and review meetings with distributor managers
  • Inventory
    • Manage levels with the Company and partner support to market needs and meet goals, by maximizing sales and merchandising opportunities.

Communication Responsibilities

A State Sales Manager – New York serves as an information resource for HRD and as a conduit with our business partners and VP Sales. Success can be measured in the following categories:

  • Providing HRD management with specific, current information on market conditions
  • Formulating recommendations for all business needs that will grow representation and results at the account level
  • Submitting required reports promptly and accurately as directed by management and maintaining up to date market records as specified by management
  • Maintaining adequate, well-organized inventories of sales tools and merchandising materials.
  • Following HRD policies and procedures

Marketing Events and Promotion Responsibilities

A State Sales Manager – New York is expected to lead and execute promotion objectives during marketing sponsored functions within the areas of responsibility.

  • Act as the liaison between the promotions team and the field in terms of executing brand positioning and performance at events and consumer venues (trade shows, tastings)
  • Assist in the communication process for all parties (VP Sales/Division Manager, Marketing Team, and Distributor) to ensure promotion success and targeted results.
  • Other events and activities as directed by VP Sales/Division Manager

Fiscal Responsibilities

  • Budgets will be provided for T&E and promotions. You are expected to manage the resources in accordance with the Hood River Fiscal Policies and legal regulations.
  • Exceeding the budgets without prior approval is not permissible

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and Experience

College degree preferred – Bachelor’s degree or minimum of 5 years industry experience and or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Technology

Productive and skillful computer knowledge is necessary.

  • Understanding and ability to work with all Microsoft Office Suite programs
  • Utilize information provided by business partners
  • Ability to access and maximize use of HRD systems, including ERP
  • Desire to expand skill set

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization

Travel

Expected to be up to 60% of managed time, dependent upon budget. Some weekend travel is required.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, margins, mark-ups, and percentages to apply concepts to practical applications.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Must have strong analytical skills.

Work Environment

The work environment will vary for each promotional event. The work environment can include indoor and outdoor events, dust, varying weather conditions, public crowds, access to VIP, talent staging and non-public venues. State Managers will travel to a variety of cities and events and will work both late nights and weekends. Working directly with the public, sales personnel will encounter crowded environments (both indoor and outdoor) and will be required to stand and/or walk for long periods of time. State Mangers will likely be exposed to cigarette smoke, loud music, boisterous crowds, and people who have consumed varying amounts of alcohol.

Licensing

This position requires a valid driver’s license to be maintained. HRD will review and monitor violations as required to ensure a safe and productive working environment. All state required permits as needed.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Psychology or Communications or related field preferred; equivalent experience accepted.
  • Minimum of Five (5) years of experience in HR, ideally in CPG.
  • Technology proficient with the Microsoft Office suite, G Suite, and Zoom. Capable of quickly and on your own to learn and adapt to new technologies.
  • Ability to accommodate a flexible schedule, occasionally working evenings and weekends as needed for special assignments.
