Bakery Controller


Job Overview: Serve as business partner to Plant Management while maintaining excellent communication with Operations and Corporate Finance, driving savings initiatives, confidence in reporting, and financial controls within the Bakery.

Job Duties:

Change Agent / Guidance & Support for Operations Management:
• Understanding the drivers of production variances and communicating performance to the bakery leadership team
• Take an active role in the solution (not just report problems)
• Support or lead cost savings projects with detailed cost/benefit analysis and lead reviews after implementation to measure delivered savings vs. projections
• Implement and manage practices that ensure an environment of accountability
• Provide any necessary training and guidance regarding financial and accounting concepts to better enable Operations to evaluate and act upon reported information
• Production floor walkthroughs reinforcing best practices
o Ex. Ensuring correct product scaling, Understand waste points and ensure strong processes exist to minimize loss, Understand recurring equipment failures and propose solutions based on cost/benefit, Ensure product quality (appearance and feel) meets or exceeds standard
• Clear and timely communication of issues & known future obstacles from bakery to corporate partners

• Strong understanding and execution of accruals and recognition timing, and correct use of accounts
• Ensure proper Internal Control Environment with basic control testing – Safeguard of assets, existence of assets, ordering/payment approval, payroll fraud, security, etc.
• Lead the development of production, staffing, and spending plans and forecast updates
• Active role in capital project budgeting and proposals
• PO or Invoice approval & coding, and working with A/P to resolve issues
• Champion accurate and complete physical inventory processes involving continual cycle counts with meaningful variance reconciliation and corrective action
• Partner with engineering to define adequate spare parts inventory and tracking

• Good technical experience understanding SAP and an Excel power-user
• Use corporate or self-created tools to track and explain specifics about performance
• Production report data validation
• Waste monitoring / tracking
• Evaluate SAP BOMs and routings vs. reality to identify and communicate differences

Background Requirements:

Education / Experience Requirements:
• Accounting degree
• 5+ years experience in the consumer packaged goods industry with an emphasis on internal controls, operational accounting, inventory accounting, and cost accounting
• Experience working with SAP

Required Skills:
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Proficient at using PC applications (Excel, Access, etc.)
• Self-starter and ability to work independently
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Able to work effectively across functions and levels
